Analysing A Movie Poster

This is a film poster of the latest film, Sex in the city. The poster represents many different connotations and denotations. Also the form and style that the way the poster is set out shows, which type of target audience the film is aimed at.
Genre:
From this poster I can see that this films genre is romantic. This can be told because sex in the city was previous a series and the main actor which also can be seen in the middle of the poster is a romantic comic writer. She has been seen to write about love gained and love lost.
Narrative:
The narrative from this poster comes from the main character in the centre of the poster. This could predict that she is the victim or hero. There is also a form of a caption beside the image of the characters shadow this could predict the plot. The use of “carried away” could mean that her feelings become carried away and she lets her feeling go making herself venerable to other people, possibly men. Then the shadow could then be the previous side of her where she was able to get hurt and then the character dressed in pink in the one that has learnt from her mistakes. This therefore shows two sides of the character. However this poster does not portray any conflict.
Representation:
The font and the way the title of the film is set out in the centre of the posers. This stands out to the reader. Also the font is in pink, this means that the audience would be women. The connotation of the diamonds in the title is that it gives a female aspect. Also the connotation for diamonds is romance, this reinforces the genre of the movie. The denotation of the main character, Carrie Bradshaw, is that she is wearing a bright pink dress whilst walking and laughing. The connation of pink is female and bright. The fact that she is laughing means that is enjoying herself and is strutting around shows that she is proud person. This shows she is a bubbly and happy character no sign of jealousy or conflict.
Connection to Audience
There is a clear target audience for this film. Females are targeted as there is a clear gender identification as you can see from the diamond pink title and the pink dressed character. The colour pink connotation is female and happy. There is also another connection from the audience to the film, this is that there are previous TV series that link with this. This will appeal to them because it is a continuation of the TV series, I can imagine this is a large amount of people because this was a successful series. Another connection from the audience to the film is the actor playing the main character featured on this poster. The main character, Carrie Bradshaw is played by actress Sarah Jessica Parker. Her present fans would be also be the target audience because if they support the actress they will follow her in a film.
